America’s Math Anxiety Is Making The Covid-19 Crisis Worse

The other morning I woke up to my nine-year-old daughter, Sarah, sadly telling me that “It’s not safe to get a dog.” Since she’s been begging me to adopt a rescue pooch for several months, I wanted to get to the bottom of why she was suddenly fearful. After a bit of probing, I learned that she saw a recent news story about dogs’ susceptibility to the coronavirus. I reassured her that this is a very rare occurrence – only affecting two out of around 250,000 pet dogs who live in Hong Kong – and, as far as scientists know, dogs can’t transmit the virus to people. Her response: “Mommy, this is no time for math!”
