The Coronavirus: Is This Higher Education’s Black Swan Event?

It is hard to imagine many higher risk sites for the spread of the coronavirus than college campuses. Students live in close proximity, take classes in often crowded classrooms, eat in communal settings, and cheer on their teams in auditoriums where high fives and hugs are common. They often fan out into their communities for work or volunteer activity. With social distancing the most effective tool for flattening the infection curve absent a vaccine, the wave of colleges and universities sending students home and finishing the academic year online is good for all of us.
