For more than 50 years, Pell Grants have been a cornerstone of the American dream.
They’re the foundation of our financial aid system, a subsidy from the U.S. government for every postsecondary student who demonstrates need. Since the program was created in 1965 (when it was called the Basic Educational Opportunity Grant), the percentage of Americans over 25 years old with a college degree has quadrupled from 9.4% to 37.5%.
