It was late at night. The rain had been falling for hours, blurring the lines of the winding road ahead. I was behind the wheel, still feeling the fog of jet lag from a long flight back from Japan. I was not speeding. But I was running on too little sleep and too much determination.
A bend came up quickly. My brain was slow to respond. In a moment, I had lost control. When I came to, I was heading straight for a fence. I swerved, the car flipped, and somehow, miraculously, I walked away with only a small bruise on my nose.
