In A Year Of Consequential Elections, Colleges—And College Students—Have A Crucial Role To Play

They’re calling 2024 the biggest election year in history.
That’s not just because of the U.S. presidential election coming up in November, a likely Biden-Trump rematch that promises to be fought as total war. This year, regional and national elections will be held in more than 60 countries around the world—covering about half the world’s population.
And many of these elections are in countries or regions with life-and-death matters at stake. Taiwan, where tensions with China are high, held a presidential election last weekend, and kept in power the party that promises to stand up for independence. Across Europe, far-right nationalist parties have been thriving—an explicitly anti-Islam party in the traditionally liberal Netherlands shocked the continent by winning a parliamentary plurality last fall—and there’s an EU parliament election coming up this spring. In our part of the world, Mexico will hold a presidential election in June.
